Soaking rainfall will converge on drought-stricken areas of the central United States this week and beyond, AccuWeather meteorologists say. The needed rain is likely to provide a boost to the Mississippi River, which has reached historic lows in some places. Three weather systems will work together to bring a couple of rounds of rain this week from the southern Plains to part of the Upper Midwest, AccuWeather On-Air Meteorologist Bree Guy said. Severe to exceptional drought conditions are gripping large swaths of the Central states, according to the United States Drought Monitor. “Tropical moisture from Norma is already streaming northeastward from Mexico, while…
The Minnesota attorney general’s office is investigating potentially exploitative real estate transactions that have targeted Somali and Hispanic immigrant homebuyers in the state. The attorney general’s action follows a report by ProPublica and Sahan Journal last year that revealed how contracts for deed — an alternative home sale agreement made directly between a seller and a buyer — can lock purchasers into inflated prices and unfavorable terms, and sometimes lead to eviction and the loss of their life savings. “We have received a high number of complaints about predatory lending practices,” Mark Iris, an assistant attorney general in the office’s civil rights…
The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), alongside the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a $24.3 million COTA mobility center at Rickenbacker. The mobility center is aimed at boosting economic development, education, child and family support, food and nutrition access and connecting central Ohio residents to job opportunities. The state-of-the-art mobility center at Rickenbacker, located at LondonGroveport and Shook Roads in southern Franklin County, will connect with the Rickenbacker community, serving as an advanced transportation meeting point for transit vehicles from COTA and other agencies in multiple counties, alternative mobility options including bikes, scooters and shared rides,…
TAMPA, Fla. – On Oct. 2, 2023, the U.S. government transferred approximately 1.1 million 7.62mm rounds to the Ukrainian armed forces. The government obtained ownership of these munitions on July 20, 2023, through the Department of Justice’s civil forfeiture claims against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These munitions were originally seized by U.S. Central Command naval forces from the transiting stateless dhow MARWAN 1, Dec. 9, 2022. The munitions were being transferred from the IRGC to the Houthis in Yemen in violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216. The U.S. is committed to working with our allies and…
How much ever pizza, burger, noodles or pasta we eat nothing can beat the taste and flavour of Indian cuisine. Desi food not only fills our tummy but also satiates our taste buds and soul. Apart from the country, Indian delights are popular in other parts of the world as well. Kebab, chicken tikka, naan, chole, samosa, idli, dosa and gulab jamun are some iconic dishes that have a separate fan base among international foodies. However, Indians living abroad face the actual problem. It becomes very difficult for them to find the authentic Indian dishes in other countries. This is the main reason…
More Americans than ever are dying from fentanyl overdoses as the fourth wave of the opioid epidemic crashes through every community, in every corner of the country. It was six years ago that Kim Blake’s son Sean died from an accidental fentanyl overdose in Burlington, Vermont. He was 27 years old. “Every time I hear of a loss to substance use, my heart breaks a little more,” Ms Blake wrote in a blog dedicated to her son in 2021. “Another family shattered. Forever grieving the loss of dreams and celebrations.” That year, the US witnessed a grim milestone: for the…
“Market sentiment” is one of modernity’s great phrases. The markets sense that a European recession is looming: the euro exchange rate has fallen by 5% since July, interest rates on government bonds are falling; money is always quick to scare. Businesses are also beginning to sense that a downturn is coming: wage growth is slowing in the eurozone, despite the fact that several countries are experiencing record low unemployment. Such downturns — in the form of recession — have multiple causes; that’s a truism in economics: everything is multi-causal. Among the main causes, we could cite geopolitical factors: a war in Europe…
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – People from all over the United States are attending the Central States Fair which brings back a few of these traditions. Once you’re at the fair you’re going to typically see carnival rides, try different food, and view the livestock. However, also located on the grounds are a few demonstrations of different kinds of art, such as wood carving. “We’re just here to give demonstrations, answer questions, introduce people to the hobby of wood carving, and hopefully pick up a few more members for our club,” said Donald Mitchell, president of Hay Camp Woodcarvers. As…
ATLANTA — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis opened her investigation into Donald Trump after the release of a recording of a January 2021 phone call between Trump and Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger. Trump suggested during the call that Raffensperger, a Republican and the state’s top elections official, could help “find” the votes needed to overturn his narrow loss to Democrat Joe Biden. More than two years later, the indictment that could soon be brought by a grand jury could go far beyond that phone call, alleging a web of crimes committed by Trump and others. Willis is…
