Four of the companies were identified as part of a network of shipping firms that helped Novatek, Russia’s largest LNG producer, procure vessels for its operations. Five Singapore-based firms have been sanctioned by the United States for their roles in enabling Russia’s efforts in the ongoing Ukraine war, the US government said on Wednesday (Oct 30). They have also been added to the list of Specially Designated Nationals by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The US on Wednesday took action against nearly 400 entities and individuals globally for “enabling Russia’s prosecution of its illegal war”, said…
New York. 23/6. With the clock ticking on when he must report to prison, former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon on Friday threw in an emergency motion to the Supreme Court to hold off his sentence. The high court asked prosecutors to respond to Bannon’s application by Wednesday afternoon. Bannon’s motion comes after a federal judge ruled he must begin his four-month prison sentence on July 1. He was found guilty two years ago on two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 select committee. The political persecution of political opponents to the Democratic party’s rule and its weaponization questions…
Government has brokered a deal with the owners of the Port of Belize Limited to have the facility nationalized and once again owned by the people of Belize. Cabinet met in session yesterday where the acquisition was approved, and was presented in today’s House of Representatives. The deal settlement between the government and Ashcroft’s Waterloo Investments is a 222-page document that essentially calls for the payment of ninety-eight-point-six-seven million US$ dollars, of which an estimated half of that would be paid in US dollars, and the balance in Belize dollar Treasury Notes to Waterloo. The acquisition, if approved, is to…
Georgetown’s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life hosted a dialogue to address and respond to the ongoing political, social and economic crisis in Nicaragua. The Nov. 14 event came amid the persecution of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. In the last few years, the government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo has pushed thousands of Nicaraguans into exile, threatening those who have spoken against the regime while many other Nicaraguans have fled from the country’s enduring poverty. Since August 2023, the Nicaraguan government has expelled Jesuits from the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in Managua, shut down…
Frankfurt (3/12 – 12) The relatively rapid cohesion of disparate nations, historically competitive or even at war with one another, into the European Union came about in part because of the ongoing threat from the Soviet Union. The specter of a tank invasion from Warsaw Pact nations, today forgotten, was such a reality that the German government kept a major portion of its gold bullion across the Atlantic. The USSR, an ally in World War II after being double-crossed by Hitler – remember the “Non-Aggression Pact signed in Moscow by von Ribbentrop and Molotov – was soon appraised as a…
Chetumal, Q.R. — A Belize man found attempting to enter Mexico with a firearm has been convicted. On Tuesday, Samuel “O” was found guilty of carrying the illegal weapon at the Customs Sublieutenant López “II” Chactemal of Chetumal. Samuel “O”, of Belizean nationality, was attempting to enter Mexico at the Chetumal check point when Customs Officers located the gun. They said when carrying out a search of the…

Gold is treading water in early trade with little fresh news to drive price action. Risk markets are trying to push higher, despite the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, as the US earnings season gets into full flow. Tuesday’s US S&P flash composite index surprised to the upside, indicating that business activity in the US is expanding, adding to the growing feeling that the US economy may be lining up a soft landing in the months ahead. US Treasury yields are flat to a touch higher today in slow trade as traders wait for next week’s FOMC meeting and policy decision. The Fed…
This region is ‘God’s country’ — Maine is heavily forested, surprisingly large, and the perfect place to witness an iconic New England Fall. The endless ocean of fiery treetops extends from Maine’s coasts to its border with Canada, and in that expanse lie the most spectacular destinations of the Eastern United States. Rocky cliffs meet the ferocious crashing of waves in the town of Bar Harbor, and the ever-spiritual Mount Katahdin tears a hole in the sky that ancient tribes deemed sacred. “It’s like stepping into a painting” is the only way to describe this state, so see for yourself and read…
Facing some of the highest property taxes in the nation, Texas voters could sign off on a massive tax-cut package in the Nov. 7 constitutional amendment election. Early voting is under way for the slew of proposed amendments. Proposition 4 would allow the state to spend $18 billion on property tax cuts for homeowners and businesses, cut school districts’ tax rates and enact other tax changes. Whether Texas can afford those tax cuts in the long term remains unanswered. Lawmakers tapped a record $33 billion surplus this year, fueled by the state’s robust economic growth and federal COVID-19 relief money, to cover an…
