The story so far: On September 12, Justice Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia started hearing what is being described as the most important case about the future of the Internet. Over the course of the next 10 weeks, Justice Mehta will hear arguments of the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and several U.S. States to the effect that Google used illegal tactics to maintain a monopoly in online search. Several top officials from Google, including CEO Sundar Pichai, are expected to be called in as witnesses. If the allegations against the $1.7 trillion Silicon Valley giant…

On September 29, German chancellor Olaf Scholz will meet with the presidents of the five countries in Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Regional tensions, especially since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, are likely to dominate the agenda. But Germany should not pass up the opportunity to press the Central Asia leaders on the very poor human rights records in their countries. The Ukraine war has sparked a new focus on this strategically important, resource rich region. At Friday’s meeting, Germany is expected to urge the five countries to resist efforts by Moscow to use trade routes through their region…
The United States military has announced it will conduct interviews with service members about the events leading up to a deadly suicide bombing near Kabul’s airport in August 2021, when the country was withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan. On Friday, the Pentagon’s Central Command said that it would interview about two dozen people about the explosion that killed 170 Afghans and 13 US service members. But it emphasised it would not reopen its investigation into the bombing. “The purpose of these interviews is to ensure we do our due diligence with the new information that has come to light, that the relevant voices…
I begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet and I pay my respects to their elders past, present and emerging. I am proud to lead a Government that will give every Australian the opportunity to vote for constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at a referendum later this year. I’m delighted to be here with all of you this morning, on another beautiful day in WA. I acknowledge all my colleagues here this morning, particularly my outstanding Western Australian colleagues. From my first day as Labor Leader, winning in Western Australia…
Toronto, Atlanta (5/9 – 50) An objective appraisal of representative democracy around the planet would conclude that it is in rather a poor condition – at least when held up and compared to an ideal. Singapore has been ruled in a mildly authoritarian manner by the same party since independence in 1965, while Japan’s one-party parliamentary democracy has endured since the end of Occupation in the early 1950s, with intervals out of power. Europe, Australia and the USA are similarly beset with fossilized political parties that while holding a tight grip on power receive dismal approval ratings from the electorate. …
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Monday was comfortable with highs in the low to mid 70s with breezy winds and light, patchy drizzle east of I-29. This is the last day of cooler weather for quite some time. Highs will build back into the 80s Tuesday with 90s returning by Wednesday. A brief “cold” front will drop highs to the low 80s for a day on Thursday before the heat builds in again. A ridge of high pressure will strengthen over the central United States by this weekend pushing the jet stream well into Canada. The high pressure will keep any…
A major change in the weather pattern is coming as a massive heat dome develops over the Heartland of the United States later this week, and it may persist through much of the second half of August, AccuWeather meteorologists warn. Along with triggering a string of days where temperatures push the upper 90s to 100 F in many areas of the nation’s midsection, some relief from heat and dryness is anticipated in parts of the South and West as the setup shifts, forecasters say. Texas has been the focal point of unrelenting heat this summer with the temperature in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and…
In 2022, the value of energy trade between the United States and Canada surpassed the previous 2008 record high on the back of high commodity prices, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. By volume, 2022 energy trade between the two countries remained nearly unchanged from 2021. However, in 2022, because energy prices were high, energy trade between the United States and Canada totaled $190 billion when adjusted for inflation, compared with $134 billion in 2021 and $178 billion in 2008. Energy trade value is the combined value of energy imports and exports between two countries. Trade value is driven…
